About Us

Bridport Health and Wellbeing

We have a very diverse and interesting group. For more of what we do, see the Directory of Therapists page with our list of therapists and what they do

We have attended several local fairs; we have been giving regular talks on various aspects of health and wellbeing, including on reflexology, iridology, yoga, holistic healing, homeopathy, ‘functional medicine’, osteopathy, growing vegetables, supporting the immune system; using homeopathy for gardening and nutrition, diet and the blue zones (areas of the world where people live to over 100).

The group includes three qualified herbalists: we run herb walks and herb tincture workshops; a general day course called Get Well Keep Well; regular fermenting demonstrations and seed sprouting demonstrations, and run a local youth group. We also have a gardening (growing vegetables) group. The gardening group offers to help others with their garden in exchange for a meal/lunch, as well as encouraging each other to grow more themselves.

We also now have a community vegetable garden - 'The Garden Retreat' - next to the Bridport medical centre for anyone for whom it would be helpful to spend time in a garden or wants to grow some of their own vegetables

The first year, we had stalls at St Mary’s School in Bridport, at the Henge Festival in Dorchester, and then the following year at the Bridport Food Festival. In addition they have a stall in Bucky Doo Square once a month in good weather, to help promote its key mission: to encourage everyone to take responsibility for their health.

As group member and Japanese cookery writer Shirley Booth Moore says:

"Aware that many of us have to watch our spending, we want to emphasise that there are many ways you can help look after your health and body at low, or no, cost.

Herbs are free; walking in the fresh sea air is free; exercise is free.

We know our medical services are under pressure, so it makes sense for us to do whatever we can for ourselves to stay healthy and reduce the burden on the beleaguered NHS.

Instead of waiting to see a doctor for minor ailments, would you like to learn more about how to help your body to heal itself and to stay healthy: how to exercise, breathe properly, how to learn to ‘read’ your body and understand what it needs? Would you like to learn more about how food can help? How to eat healthily - and cheaply? How to preserve food for winter, or grow your own - even on a window sill or window box? How do you sprout seeds or ferment vegetables to increase their nutritional value - and taste? How to make your own herbal medicines to prepare for winter’s coughs and colds? How about nasturtium vinegar? Or thyme tincture?”

In 2024 and 2025, we held a Health and Wellbeing Festival in St Mary’s Church Hall, Bridport. We were delighted with the fantastic attendance and positive and enthusiastic feedback we received for both years' events, and are hoping that next year’s event will be even bigger and better!

This is a comment from someone who attended the Festival:

"Thank you for all that effort and love. The event was an amazing success, not measured in monetary terms but in putting Bridport firmly on the map as somewhere that people who look for holistic ways of staying healthy can come to ... and be proud of. There was such a sense of community and common purpose"

The date for next year's calendar is:
Bridport Health and Wellbeing Festival
St Mary's Hall, South Street, Bridport
12th September 2026
